Maximizing Productivity

I came home from the team retreat with one thought in mind: I want to be more productive at work.

So, I've thought of ways on how I could maximize my productivity while working from home.

That is why I got myself these 3 things:
  • A good work desk
  • A 23 inch monitor
  • A wireless keyboard
I basically just made my MacBook Air a full desktop and it's amazing.

It's great how everything seems so different and more efficient when done on a big screen.

I feel like I could get more work done.

That's just the first step. I hope to get more ideas to maximize productivity at work.

P.S. The Logitech K380 keyboard is fantastic!

How I Keep My Mind Alert

I stay in the computer for long periods of time.

It's actually pretty straining to the eyes. But, that is the nature of my job and pretty much everything else that I do.

So, I tried to find a way to keep those creative juices from flowing even if I decide to get off my computer.

The answer is The Rubik's Cube.

I don't know what this cube does to the brain scientifically. I just feel like it makes me alert and it helps my brain to constantly think logically and actively -- even during downtimes.

Every time I take a break from work and go off the computer screen, I pick up, scramble and then solve the cube.

My mind stays active even though I am not working. That means no slacking off during break times. So much win.

I recommend it to other people who are in the same boat as I am.

P.S.
I can now solve the cube in less than 40 seconds (as of this writing).

Put it in the calendar

I am not a really super organized person.

But, it's fair to say that I get things done.

I do quite a lot of tasks -- various tasks. My week easily gets filled up with appointments and commitments.

So, how do I get all of these done and not forget a single thing?

It's actually pretty simple.

It's not about having a super complex to-do list or a fancy app to remind you of things.

I just put the things I need to in my calendar.

Yes, you heard that right. Put it in the calendar.

For every thing that I need to do every single day, I block certain times of the day when I need to do them.

This extends beyond work. This includes my personal tasks and other stuff I need to do outside of work.

That's really basically it.

Once I put it in the calendar, it automatically sends a signal to my brain that I need to do it.

You know, I really don't like it when people say they are busy. It seems like a lazy excuse. And, we all are busy. Who isn't?

I think those people just don't find time. And, finding time starts with putting it in the calendar.

Just do it. It's a really simple ritual. But, it makes things a whole lot better. Plus, it increases the chances of getting them done!

I felt lazy today... and it's okay.

Today, I was extra lazy.

When Is The Best Time To Work?

As a telecommuter who is working from home, I have the privilege of working on a flexible schedule.

That means I can work on any time of the day as long as I get stuff done and fulfill the necessary requirements.

For instance, right now we are experiencing 7 hours of power interruption daily. No problem. I could strategically schedule my work at times when power is available.

That advantage comes with a great responsibility by the way.

That is the responsibility of figuring out the best time to work. This is essential because having a flexible work schedule also means knowing when to schedule your 'work time' which is ideally when you are at your peak.

From my experience, there is no definite and uniform time for everyone. This is why the more I work from home the more I realize how inefficient the 9 to 5 work setup is where people are forced to be fully immersed at work at the regular 'office hours.'

The best time to work is actually when you are most productive. It is as simple as that.

However, figuring out that time is not as easy as it seems. It requires a lot of self-assessment and observation of your work habits and the results that come with it.

In my case, it took me years to figure out that I work best at 6-8PM and at 10PM to 1AM.

Obviously, I am a night owl. But, I can also squeeze out my brain to do great work at around 10AM-11AM.

I usually reserve my most critical tasks for those times. That is because these are the times when my brain performs best.

External factors also come into play. For instance, the current environment I am in, the temperature, the background noise and in most cases the coffee I drink (it has to be extra strong).

I continue to listen to my body though. As I grow older, I believe this will change. There might also be some brain hacks to change that. But, that is a subject for another research.

How about you?

When is your best time to work? When are you most productive? I would be interested to hear your stories.

Productivity Killers

4 unfortunate, terrible and exhausting things happened today.

1. Intense heat

From where I am at, it's high summer. Our temperatures range from 33 to 35 degrees Celsius with a heat index of around 39-40.

That is terribly hot. It's probably the hottest we could get all year round. I've been sweating like crazy the whole day.

2. Rotational Brownouts

Every summer here in Cagayan de Oro, we experience rotational brownouts. I'm not really sure why. I don't know much about it. But, it may be because all the power we have couldn't accommodate everyone or maybe they are just trying to fix some things with the power grid.

Either way, this daily three hour brownout is stressing me out big time.

3. Distractions

I work at home. For those of you who have been doing remote work, I'm sure you are very familiar with the usual distractions we experience on a daily basis when we are working from our own house.

Plus, we have 2 kids here. You know how they work. They were designed to get everyone's attention.

4. Colds

I always experience this. It's kind of my "regular sickness."

Add all these things up.

That leaves me having such a terrible headache as this day is about to end.

I need to be productive to still need to get some things done. But, my productivity is being killed by these unfortunate circumstances.

These productivity killers are hard to avoid. There's nothing much I could do to change the situation too. The only thing I could do is to hope that things would get better tomorrow.

How about you? Do you have your own productivity killers that keep you from being on top of your game on such a busy work day like this?
